Fourth quarter drought stymies women’s basketball

VALHALLA, NY – After leading much of the contest, Broncos women's basketball fell 59-39 Saturday afternoon to host Westchester CC in non-region play.

Forward Catherline McNeal posted a season-high eight points on a team-best 4-of-8 shooting, leading all players with 13 rebounds. Fellow freshman Shawnasia Ofaire posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Keyanna Drew led Bronx with 13 points and five steals.

A close game controlled by the Broncos for most of three quarters went the way of Westchester in the fourth, when the hosts held Bronx to 4-18 shooting in pulling away.

Nyla Harris' jumper put the Broncos up 12-9 late in the first, and Bronx entered the second leading 12-11. McNeal's layup lifted Bronx to an 18-14 lead, but the Vikings responded with an 8-0 run, entering halftime on top 22-20.

Drew's lay-in capped a 6-0 Broncos run in regaining a four-point lead out of the intermission. However, back-to-back Donjeta Prelvukaj three-pointers swung the momentum in the host's favor, and Westchester entered the fourth quarter ahead 36-30.

Adriana McFadden connected from distance for the Vikings in upping the lead to 39-30, and Bronx was held scoreless for the first 4:12 of the frame. Westchester outscored Bronx 23-9 in the fourth, and went on to a 59-39 win.

Harris totaled eight points, four rebounds, and three steals for the Broncos, while Frances Harris corralled six rebounds, to go with four assists and four steals.

Bronx (1-3, 1-1 CUNYAC) returns to play Tuesday in non-region action against ASA College at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Gym.
