Nayely Rodriguez and Nicole Santos Honored On Sophomore Night

BRONX, NY – Sophomores Nicole Santos and Nayely Rodriguez were honored on Thursday night as they participated in their final home game of their Broncos careers, that resulted in a close 3-1 loss against Hostos CC.

Nicole Santos has been a pillar of stability and leadership for the Broncos in her two seasons. A CUNYAC Honor Roll student-athlete, the outside hitter and team captain has appeared in 30 matches, totaling career-bests of eight digs in her college debut vs. Middlesex and eight kills with nine points in a 3-2 win over Five Towns College on October 16, 2019.

Nayely Rodriguez returned for her sophomore season after being named 2019 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year after leading the Broncos in set assists (143) and digs (168), finishing second in kills. The outside hitter and setter has appeared in 30 matches in her two seasons, currently leading the Broncos in points, kills, and service aces.

The Broncos fought hard Thursday night in a tight see-saw affair with Hostos CC. The final score line doesn't quite represent the back and forth nature of the game. Bronx lead by at least two points in each set of the match. The sophomores played very well for the Broncos, Nicole Santos finished with four service aces and six total points while Nayely Rodriguez tallied three service aces and eight total points.

Bronx lost the first two hard fought sets but responded by pulling out the third set 25-19. The Broncos worked hard by forcing 15 errors by Hostos to keep the match close. After pulling out the third set to make the game 2-1, the Broncos went up 18-13 late in the fourth set, looking to force a fifth and final set of the game. The tides turned at this moment when Hostos player, Savannah Williams, went on a stretch of services aces to take back the lead and eventually win the game for the Caimans 25-21. Williams finished the game with 15 service aces and 27 total points.

The Bronx record moves to 0-8 (0-4) while Hostos improves to 2-5 (2-1). The Broncos will finish up their season with four games on the road. Their next match is against Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie on Saturday October 9th at 12:00pm.
