BAYSIDE, NY - #5 Bronx CC Broncos defeated the #4 Queensborough CC Tigers 2-2 (5-4) by penalty kicks on Saturday in the NJCAA Division III Region XV Tournament.
These two teams faced off for the third time this season and the match did not disappoint. The Broncos got on the board first via a goal from freshman forward,
Jordy Leon, with 3:51 remaining in the first half. The prior two matches were similar in fashion where the Broncos dominated in play in the first half, only to struggle and eventually lose the match in the second half.
This playoff matchup was physical throughout with yellow cards being handed out on both sides. Queensborough CC tied the game in the 55th minute but that lead didn't last long as freshman forward
Elder Rabanales scored to give the Bronx the 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute. The Bronx would hold the lead until Queensborough was awarded a penalty in the last minute of the game. The Tigers converted the penalty kick and forced the game to overtime.
The teams went through two overtimes with no events, forcing the game into penalty kicks to determine the fate of their seasons. The teams went back and forth with goals until forward
Elder Rabanales had the chance to score and send the Broncos to the second round of the regional playoff. Rabanales converted the penalty kick to send the Broncos deeper into the postseason and defeat the Queensborough CC Tigers for the first time this season.
The Bronx CC Broncos advance to the semifinals of the NJCAA Division III Regional XV CC Men's Soccer Tournament and improve their overall record to 6-5-0 on the season. The Broncos will now face the #1 team in the region, Nassau CC, Wednesday at 4:00 pm in Garden City.
