MASPETH, NY - The Bronx CC Broncos were defeated last night in the CUNY Athletic Conference Championship Game by Queensborough CC at the Metropolitan Oval Complex.
It was a tale of two halves for the Broncos in a game that closely resembled their first meeting with the Queensborough Tigers. The Broncos started hot out of the gate, applying pressure to the Tigers defense early on in the first half. The Bronx was awarded a penalty kick in the first ten minutes coming from a foul inside the Queensborough defensive box. Sophomore midfielder,
Baba Anne, stepped up to take the penalty kick. Anne struck the ball to the left corner but it was saved by the keeper, the rebound fell directly to freshman
Kevin Mendoza but he hit it high of the crossbar, out of play. That would be the Broncos best chance to get out to a 1-0 lead and set the tone of the championship match. The Bronx dominated play in the first half, leading the Tigers in shots 11-4. The Bronx had a great first half in the initial meeting of these two teams earlier this season.
Unfortunately for the Broncos, the second half played out very similarly to the initial meeting. Queensborough dominated the play coming out of halftime. Six minutes into the start of second-half play, the Tigers won a free kick in the Broncos half of the field. John Pavana stepped up to take the free-kick, smashing it home, curling it into the top left corner. The Tigers controlled the game from that point on, and six minutes later, added a second goal on a deflected shot from outside the box. The Tigers third goal came from a beautiful header on a cross from John Pavana.
Queensborough defeated Bronx 3-0. The Broncos lead in shots 17-15, corner kicks were even 3-3, and Bronx committed more fouls,12-7. John Pavana was named MVP of the CUNY Championship Game with a goal and assist. Bronx CC drops to 4-5-0 while Queensborough CC improves to 6-4-0. Both teams shift their focus to the NJCAA Region XV Tournament where they await their seed and opponent in the upcoming week.
