Broncos dominated by Seahawks 14-2 at Hawks Nest in St. Mary's City, Maryland

The Broncos College baseball team dropped its fifth consecutive contest to start the 2020 season, falling to the Seahawks of St. Mary's College of Maryland by a score of 14-2 at the Hawks Nest in St. Mary's City, MD. While Bronx slipped to 0-5 on the year, the Seahawks improved to a mark of 5-3.

The Seahawks wasted no time grabbing a commanding lead, pushing five runs across home plate in the bottom of the first inning to race out to a 5-0 advantage. Jay Hammett started the scoring barrage with a RBI double to center field. Dillon Waters followed, registering a sacrifice fly to score Joey Bryner to make it 2-0 in favor of St. Mary's College of Maryland. The Seahawks increased their lead to three when Bowen Plagge registered a single to left field. Andy Collins recorded a RBI to give the Seahawks a 4-0 lead and shortly thereafter, Plagge stole home to cap off the first inning.

Bronx would strike back with a pair of runs in the top of the second, thanks to a based load walk drawn by Widner German. That free pass brought home Neudy Salvador to make it a 5-1 ballgame. Later in the inning, Eduardo Ynfante recorded a sacrifice fly (Domiel Castillo would dent home plate on the play) to pull the Broncos to within three runs at 5-2.

St. Mary's City of Maryland would respond in the bottom of the second inning, as Jake Wood would steal home to account for the Seahawks sixth run, and Jay Hammett's RBI groundout pushed the score to 7-2 in favor of the home team.

The Seahawks continued to proper offensively in this one, as they'd plate four more runs in the bottom of the third. Hammett's RBI double increased St. Mary's City of Maryland's advantage to 8-2, and Waters' three-run homerun broke the game wide open, making it 11-2 Seahawks.

Neither team would dent home plate again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Waters would once again go yard, connecting on his second three-run homerun of the day to give his team a 14-2 edge, concluding the contest.

Juan Vasquez started the game and took the loss for Bronx, as he struggled through three innings of work, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on even hits while walking five and striking out a batter. Rodrigo Garcia was a bright spot on the Hill for the Broncos, as he twirled two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and two walks while whiffing a pair.

Kelli Jenkins started the game for the Seahawks on the mound and threw one scoreless inning, striking one batter out. St. Mary's City of Maryland continued to change pitchers each inning. On the day, Seahawks pitchers combined to not allow an earned run. Noah Meyers, Jonathan Everidge, Bryan Brooks, and Will Spanoghe notched one strikeout, apiece.

Offensively, the Broncos registered just four singles on the day, one apiece by Ynfante, German, Yefraini Tejada, and Elieser Munoz.

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday, as the Broncos will travel to Frozen Ropes in Chester, NY for a single game against Rockland Community College. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
