Fraini Tejada registers solo homerun in Broncos loss to Rockland Community College

The Broncos baseball team dropped its sixth consecutive contest to start the 2020 campaign, falling to the Hawks of Rockland Community College by a score of 13-1 in a five-inning, mercy-rule completed contest. The game took place at the Rock Sports Park at Frozen Ropes National Training Center in Chester, NY. While Bronx is now 0-6 on the year, Rockland improved to a mark of 2-4.

The Hawks used a four-run first inning to set the tone, and added to their lead by denting home plate twice in the home half of the second frame. Bronx, trailing by a score of 6-0 in the fourth, got on the scoreboard thanks to a solo homerun off the bat of Fraini Tejada. That blast brought the Broncos to within five runs at 6-1.

Rockland continued its scoring barrage in the bottom of the fourth, lighting up the scoreboard twice more to increase its lead to 8-1. The Hawks would solidify the victory in the bottom of the fifth, plating five runs to induce the five-inning, 10-run mercy rule.

It was not a good day for Bronx pitchers, as all three Bronco hurlers who entered the game struggled. Cristian Vargas started and took the defeat, twirling two innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits while issuing four free passes. Jerry Jerez relieved Vargas, and he wouldn't fare much better, tossing 2.1 frames and allowing four earned runs on three base hits, while issuing three free passes and striking out two. Juan Perez didn't record an out, allowing three earned runs on one hit and one walk.

Sean Dertinger started and picked up the victory for Rockland, as he was otherwise brilliant besides allowing Tejada's homerun. Overall, he pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out six.

Besides Fraini Tejada moonshot, Bronx's other two hits were singles off the bats of Domiel Castillo and Adrian Urena. The Hawks were paced by Daniel Tauken's incredible day offensively, as he went 3-for-3 with two homeruns. He also drove in seven, walked, and stole a base. Kyle Daly also registered three hits, doubling and singling twice while walking, driving in four, and stealing three bases.

The Broncos will return to action Sunday, as Bronx will stay on the road to take on Ulster County Community College in a doubleheader. Start-times for the games are set for 12:00pm and 3:00pm.
