Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos dominated by Caimans 108-86 in 2019-2020 CUNYAC championship game; Glover leads all scorers with 33 in defeat

The Broncos men's basketball team's bid for its first CUNYAC crown since the 2012-2013 campaign was dashed this evening, as No. 2 seeded Bronx fell to the No. 1 seeded Caimans of Hostos Community College by a score of 108-86. The final took place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. With the defeat, Bronx's three-game winning streak was also halted, as the Broncos slipped to 13-16 on the year. Hostos improved to 23-6 on the year, winning its fifth Steve Weingard Trophy, and first since 2014.

Bronx's Steven Glover was named to the All-Tournament team following the contest, and for good reason. Earlier tonight, he led all scorers with 33 points, draining 11 of his 22 shots from the floor, and 11 of his 12 attempts from the charity stripe. He also snatched seven rebounds, added three assists, and swatted a pair of shots. CUNYAC Player of the Year Tilquan Rucker was the other representative of the conference's All-Tournament group, as he followed-up Wednesday's 35-point, seven board performance in the semifinals against BMCC with an 18-point effort this evening to go along with three steals. Malik Hamilton came on late, finalizing his night with 18 points, four rebounds, and two steals.

Leading the way for Hostos Community College was tournament Most Valuable Player Reggie Quezada, as he netted a team-best 25 points. The standout also grabbed seven rebounds, added three steals, and registered three times. Korey Williams, who qualified for the All-Tournament team, scored 18 points, picked up a game-high six assists, and snatched three rebounds, and Edwin Takyi just missed a double-double, netting 12 points and snatching nine boards. Finally, it was Amir Redzic contributing eight points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.

In what was an absolute clinic, the Nationally-ranked Caimans extracted revenge for the home loss they suffered to the Broncos 16 days ago, building an early lead and continuing to pile on until the game got out of hand rather quickly. Hostos scored the first nine points of the game, went up 21-1, and later led 26-3 with 11:13 remaining in the opening half. A modest 6-0 run (featuring a basket by Glover, a converted layup by Abdurahan Jawara, and another jumper by Glover) by Bronx brought the Broncos to within 17 at 26-9, but the Caimans answered with a 9-2 run over the ensuing 1:56 to catapult ahead 35-11. Hostos led by as many as 34 in the session, before taking a 58-25 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Broncos did come out with renewed energy in the second half, spending the opening 7:39 of the session slicing the Caimans lead to 19 (68-49). It looked as though Bronx would perhaps make a game of it, but Hostos scored 24 of the game's ensuing 31 points to go ahead 92-56 with 5:54 remaining. The Caimans emptied the bench after jumping ahead 99-67, and Hostos eventually advanced to win the contest by 22.

Hostos connected on 53.2 percent of its attempts from the floor in securing their first CUNYAC championship in six seasons (42-79). On the flip side, the Broncos drilled 43.7 percent of their attempts from the floor (31-71). Three-point baskets loomed large in this one, as the Caimans connected on 12 of them for the evening (12-31, 38.8 percent), while Bronx swished four (4-20, 20 percent). Hostos held a commanding 57-28 edge in the rebounding department, while also registering a tournament-record 27 assists to six for the Broncos. Bronx did win the turnover battle in this one, committing 16 miscues compared to 22 for the opposition.

The Broncos will now look ahead to the NJCAA Division III Region XV Tournament, as they'll take to the road to battle Monroe-Bronx in the quarterfinals. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 8:00pm.
