Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Senators misfire on opening 21 shot attempts, still outlast Broncos, 55-47 Friday evening at Alumni Gym

The Broncos women's basketball team battled for 40 minutes on Friday evening, but Bronx came up short, falling to the Senators of SUNY Ulster by a score of 55-47. The game took place at the Alumni Gym in the Bronx. With the defeat, the Broncos slipped to a mark of 0-16 on the season, while the Senators improved to 4-6.

Incredibly, SUNY Ulster won the game despite misfiring on its first 21 shot attempts. The Senators ended up shooting just 20 percent for the game, connecting on only 19 of 95 attempts. On the flip side, Bronx didn't shoot much better, hitting on just 16 of 64 shots, a conversion rate equaling 25 percent. Both teams also struggled from the free throw line, as well. Ulster connected on 50 percent from the charity stripe (14-28), with the Broncos hitting 14 of 24 there (58.3 percent).

Despite the loss for the Bronx, Ashley Soto rebounded from a slow first half in which she registered just six points (2-10 FG) to tie for the game-high of 21 points. She hit nine of her 11 shots from the line, while also registering two steals. Jada Parker posted a hearty double-double with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and a game-high four assists, and Sophia Ridley contributed a game-high 26 rebounds, boosting her total for the season to 118 (an average of 11.8 per contest).

The Senators did just enough to keep the Broncos out of the win column for the season, and the most efficient SUNY Ulster player may have been Abigail Harries. She finished with 14 points, a team-high 16 rebounds, a game-high seven blocks, and two assists. 12 for her 16 rebounds were on the offensive glass. Patricia Tetta was the team's leading scorer, as she tied for the game-high of 21 points. She also snatched 14 boards, tied for the game-high of four assists, tallied a game-high four steals, and blocked a pair of shots. Kylie Kleine finalized her evening with 13 points and nine caroms.

Things looked promising for the Broncos over the first 7:20 of action, as Bronx held a 9-2 edge. The Senators closed out the quarter netting the final four points, pulling to within three (9-6) as the first quarter came to a close.

In the second quarter, the Senators jumped ahead 10-9 with 8:07 remaining in the half, but a drained three-point basket by Bronx's Parker put the Broncos back ahead by a score of 12-10. The quarter would feature ties of 12-12, 14-14, 16-16, and 18-18, before Bronx eventually took a 20-18 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the early stages of the second half, the Broncos built their lead back to six at 24-18, but a 12-4 SUNY Ulster run put the Senators ahead 30-28 with 5:59 remaining in the quarter. The game continued to stay tight, as neither squad would lead by more than two points for the remainder of the third quarter. After 30 minutes of action, the contest was knotted at 34-apiece.

The turning point of the game was clearly with 7:20 remaining in the fourth quarter as, with the Senators holding on to a 39-37 edge, Soto fouled out of the game for Bronx, dropping the Broncos down to four players.

For a span of 3:41 following Soto's foul-out, the Broncos battled, finding themselves in a tie game (45-45) with 3:39 left. From there, though, the Senators would outscore the Broncos 10-2 to close the game and earn the win.

Despite Ridley's astonishing 26 rebound performance, the Broncos were still dominated on the glass, as SUNY Ulster snatched 73 caroms compared to 57 for Bronx. The Senators didn't commit double digits in turnovers, as they had just nine. On the flip side, Bronx committed 21.

The Broncos will get back on the court Tuesday evening, as Bronx will travel to Poughkeepsie, NY to face Dutchess Community College. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 5:00pm.
