Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos turn in solid effort at Westchester, but Vikings (16-4) prove too strong as Bronx falls, 80-66

The Broncos men's basketball team lost for just the third time in 10 games, falling to Westchester Community College by a score of 80-66 Thursday evening. The game took place at the Viking Gymnasium in Valhalla, NY. With the loss, Bronx slipped back under the .500 mark (9-10), while the Vikings improved to an impressive mark of 16-4, winning their ninth game in a row.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Malik Hamilton put forth a valiant effort, converting on 10 of his 22 attempts from the floor and nine of his 10 shots from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 30 points. The sophomore also pulled down five rebounds, swatted two shots, and tallied two steals. Steven Glover put together another solid performance, posting a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. He also piled three dimes, blocked three shots, and added two steals. Izaiah Richardson scored eight points and snatched three boards, and newcomer Doel Rodriguez added six.

The Vikings were paced by 14 points from Willie Davis. Joe Zayer added 13 and three rebounds, and Justyn Huger turned in a versatile performance, as he scored 11 points, tallied a game-high six assists, snatched six caroms, and added two steals. Finally, it was James Brady nearly posting a double-double, as he finalized his evening with nine points and nine boards.

Things looked promising for the Broncos early on, as Bronx raced out to a 9-0 advantage after Westchester uncharacteristically misfired on its first nine opportunities from the floor. However, once the Vikings established offensive rhythm, they spent long stretches scoring at will. Westchester responded to Bronx's opening surge with a run of its own, out-scoring the Broncos 22-4 over a span of 6:29 to catapult ahead by a score of 22-13. The Vikings led by as many as 13 points late in the first half, before taking a 39-28 lead into the break.

Westchester came out soaring in the second session, scoring the first 14 points of the second stanza, over a 3:21 stretch, to make it a 53-28 game. The Broncos did continue to push despite the huge deficit, as Bronx was able to get to within 14 points (71-57) with 3:10 to go, but another 7-0 run by the Vikings after that would essentially ice the game, sending Bronx to its 10th loss of the season.

The Vikings dominated on the glass this evening, out-rebounding the Broncos by a count of 54-34. Westchester also won the turnover battle, with the Vikings committing 21 miscues compared to 25 for Bronx. The Broncos shot 40 percent of the floor for the night (23-58), while Westchester shot just percentage points below that (33-83, 39.8 percent).

The Broncos will have an opportunity to bounce back quickly, as Bronx will take on the Senators of SUNY Ulster tomorrow evening at the Alumni Gym. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
