Women's volleyball starts 2019 campaign with four set loss to Middlesex

The Broncos women's volleyball team (0-1) started their 2019 campaign with a loss on Thursday evening, falling in four sets to the Blue Colts of Middlesex (2-0) by scores of 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, and 16-25. The match was played at the Alumni Gym.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, newcomer Nossamba Kone finished her evening with a team-high 10 kills. She also added seven digs, as well. Veteran Cleimy Ozoria contributed with eight kills on the evening to go along with 11 digs, and freshman Nayely Rodriguez put forth a terrific all-around match, finishing with six kills, match-highs of 24 assists and seven service aces, and a team-high 14 digs.

In the victory for Middlesex, the Blue Colts were paced by Kilanny Ramos-Adrian, as he recorded match-highs of 14 kills, 15 digs, and two solo blocks. She also recorded a pair of aces. Rachel Eria contributed five kills, and it was Gabriella A. Rosano adding team-highs of 18 assists and six service aces to go along with seven digs.

Bronx actually recorded a higher hitting percentage in this one (.053 to .028 for the Blue Colts), but Middlesex picked up more aces (18-11) and committed fewer service errors (only six compared to 16 for Bronx).

Things started out promising for the Broncos, as Bronx captured never trailed throughout the first set. The Broncos held a slim 20-18 edge in the opener before capturing the final five points of the set to go up 1-0.

Middlesex raced out to a 4-0 advantage in the second set, but Bronx battled back to make things interesting. The Broncos pulled to within one point at 17-16, before the Blue Colts would end the set by scoring eight of the final 10 points to even the match at one set apiece.

Perhaps using the momentum of its second set victory, Middlesex never trailed again, building a 3-0 lead in the third set, and a 5-0 edge in the fourth, before eventually capturing those sets 25-19 and 25-16, respectively.

The Broncos will look to bounce back on Saturday, as they'll travel to BMCC to take on the Panthers in a CUNYAC match at 11:00am, before taking on Fashion Institute of Technology in the same venue at 1:30pm.
