Women's volleyball team still searching for first victory after three set defeat to Owls

The Broncos women's volleyball team dropped its fifth consecutive contest to start the 2019 season, falling in three sets to the Owls of Union County College by scores of 13-25, 12-25, and 16-25. The match took place at the Alumni Gymnasium. Bronx is now 0-5 on the year, while Union improved to 2-3.

After the Owls captured the first two sets, things looked promising for the Broncos in the third set, as Bronx led 11-7, prompting a Union College County timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Owls ran off five consecutive points to take a 12-11 advantage. Later in the set, Union led 18-16 before earning seven consecutive points to finish the set and the match.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, newcomer Nossamba Kone put forth a solid effort, registering four kills to go along with seven digs. Nayely Rodriguez recorded four kills, five assists, and five digs, and Alondra Mesa collected a match-high nine digs.

For the Owls, Samantha Mateo registered a match-high six kills, and setter Toni Frino led all competitors in assists for the evening, tallying nine. Union County College compiled 15 service aces on the evening, including a match-high five by Jessylynne Davilla, and another four by Murielle Mason.

Bronx will now have six days before returning to the court on Thursday, September 19, as the Broncos will take to the road to battle Fashion Institute of Technology. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
