Game Recap: Baseball |

Running off adrenaline of CUNYAC title win, Broncos give Sharks all they could handle, but Suffolk records 9-6 victory

The Broncos' baseball team lost a rain-shortened game yesterday afternoon, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk by a score of 9-6 in six innings. The game took place at Ohio Field, with Bronx serving as the visiting team for the contest. With the loss, the Broncos slipped to 14-13 on the 2019 campaign, while Suffolk moved to 15 games over .500 at 20-5.

Suffolk came into the game as one of the best teams in the country, but Bronx gave the Sharks all they could handle. The Broncos, trailing 1-0, took a 2-1 edge in the top of the fourth inning when Steven Santana recorded a two-RBI single. Adrian Urena and Quincy Williams scampered home to put Bronx ahead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, a sacrifice fly by the Sharks' Corey Tingo would even the game at two apiece. Then, in the top of the fifth, Marcos Ayala would record a clutch, two-out, three-RBI double to catapult the Broncos to a 5-2 advantage.

Suffolk would take the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, as the Sharks would score five times to push ahead 7-5. A two-RBI double by Christian Lent, and RBI walks by Tingo, Andrew Fenton, and Christopher Amato accounted for the aforementioned five runs.

The Broncos would get one run back in the top of the sixth when Justin Nunez would drive in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice. That pulled Bronx to within one run at 7-6. The Sharks would dent home plate twice in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-6, before the umpires would call the game due to rain showers.

Carlos Morel took the loss in relief for Bronx, as he tossed one inning and allowed four runs (all earned) on two hits while walking five. Starter Jesse Castillo held his own against a very good Sharks lineup, as he logged 3.1 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on two hits while walking four, hitting two batters, and striking out two.

Ryan Dunbar got the victory despite a forgettable relief appearance, as he tossed one inning and allowed three runs (all earned) while walking four, giving up one hit, and whiffing one. David Heller, who started the game, hurled four innings, allowing three earned runs on two hits while walking four and striking out one.

Despite the loss for the Bronx, the Broncos were led offensively by Ayala doubled and drove in three runs, and Santana singled and drove in a pair.
In the victory for the Sharks, Christian Lent doubled, singled, stole two bases, was hit by a pitch, scored three times, and drove in a pair. Tingo singled, walked, and drove in three.

The Broncos will return to action this afternoon, as Bronx will travel to Edison, NJ to take on Middlesex. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
