Party Like It's 2015: Broncos capture first CUNYAC crown in four seasons with 9-7 win over Kingsborough at MCU Park

After being within an out a season ago and coming up short, the Broncos closed the deal this time, defeating the Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 9-7 at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY, to claim the 2019 CUNYAC baseball title. For Bronx, it's the team's first title since 2015, when the Broncos defeated Kingsborough 4-3 in a nail-biter to capture the crown.

Bronx won its 11th conference championship as a program tonight, and improved to 14-12 on the season with the victory. The Wave saw its bid for a sixth program trophy thwarted, as Kingsborough dipped to 12-15 on the campaign.

The Broncos, who won nine of their 12 conference games during the regular season, including three out of four against Kingsborough, served as the home team on the evening. Bronx's starter, Alexander Pimentel, worked through some first inning trouble, as the Wave had runners on the corners and one out, but the right hander escaped with no damage done by Kingsborough.

In the bottom of the first, Kingsborough starter Peter Lombardo got into trouble of his own. After he retired Justin Nunez, he would issue consecutive free passes to Quincy Williams and Michael Mateo. Marcos Ayala would then reach via a fielder's choice, but Williams was forced out at third base on the play. Then, with two out and two on, Adrian Urena would come through with a screaming double to left center, driving home two runs and giving Bronx the early 2-0 advantage.

Neudy Salvador would then follow with a single to right field, advancing Urena to third base. A double steal by Salvador and Urena plated Bronx's third run, giving the Broncos a 3-0 edge. Christian Cedeno would then fly out to center to finalize the threat, but it was a very successful start for Bronx.

After Pimentel tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, Bronx continued its offensive success. Hector Camacho led off with a walk, and then proceeded to steal second. He would then come around to score on a Steven Santana single, making it 4-0 Broncos. Santana advanced to second base on the throw home. Nunez would then record an RBI single, catapulting Bronx's lead to 5-0. Later in the frame, a wild pitch by Lombardo made it 6-0 Broncos.

Similar to the first inning, Pimentel got into a jam in the third. Kingsborough put runners on first and second with one man out to start the frame. Peter Lombardo would then follow with an RBI single to make it 6-1 Bronx, and Jonathan Fonseca would follow that with a two-RBI single to pull the Wave to within three runs at 6-3. Walfi Regalado would then blast a triple to right field, chasing home another run to make it 6-4, and chasing Pimentel from the game. He would be replaced by Victor Pena.

Reilyn Pena would then push home the Wave's fifth run with an RBI groundout, before Victor Pena would record the final out of the top of the third.

The Broncos got right back to work offensively in the bottom of the third, scoring their seventh run via a RBI fielder's choice hit into by Cedeno. Bronx would threaten with two runners on and two out, but was unable to score any additional runs in the frame.

After Victor Pena tossed a scoreless inning for the Broncos in the top of the fourth, Bronx plated another run in the bottom half of the frame via a RBI single by Urena.

In the top of the fifth, the Wave's Lombardo would double with one out, and Fonseca would drive him home with a RBI single to pull the Kingsborough to within two at 8-6. Victor Pena would escape the inning with no other damage conflicted.

The Broncos would load the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning against Fonseca, who started the inning for Kingsborough in replacement of Lombardo. After Nunez struck out, Williams reached on a RBI infield single to increase Bronx's lead to 9-6. Mateo would then pop out to shortstop, and Ayala would ground out to put a cap on the inning.

In the top of the sixth, Kingsborough would dent home plate once to cut Bronx's lead to 9-7. The Broncos failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, keeping it a two-run game.

Esteban De Los Santos would pitch a scoreless seventh, inching the Broncos to within six outs of a conference title. Bronx wouldn't add to their advantage in the bottom half, keeping the score the same as the contest headed to the eighth.

After neither team was able to score in the eighth, and in the top of the ninth, a dominant De Los Santos retired all three batters he faced, with Victor grounding out to Nunez to end the game and send Broncos coaches, players, and fans into a frenzy.

Victor Pena picked up the win in relief for Bronx, as he logged 3.1 innings, allowing just two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out two. De Los Santos earned the save with an incredible performance, as he tossed 3.1 innings, not allowing a hit or a walk, while striking out two.

Taking the loss on the hill for the Wave was Lombardo, as he was rocked four nine earned runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out one. Fonseca pitched four brilliant innings of relief to keep Kingsborough in the game, as he didn't allow a run while striking out four.

Offensively for the Broncos, Urena, the game's Most Valuable Player, put forth a sensational effort at the dish, as he collected a double, a pair of singles, three RBI, two stolen bases, while scoring two runs. Williams added a pair of singles while walking and driving in a run, and Salvador singled twice and stole a base.

Despite the loss for Kingsborough, Lombardo doubled, recorded a pair of singles, scored two runs, drove in one, and walked. Vento singled twice, stole two bases, scored a run, and drew a walk, and Regalado tripled, dented home plate once, and picked up a RBI.

Bronx will continue its season on tomorrow, as they'll take on Suffolk at Ohio Field. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
