Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos earn split of CUNYAC doubleheader with BMCC, defeating Panthers 18-3 in opener before dropping nightcap, 3-2

The Broncos wrapped-up their 2019 CUNYAC portion of the regular season schedule yesterday, splitting a pair of games with BMCC, defeating the Panthers 18-3 in game one before falling 3-2 in game two. With the output, Bronx is now 13-12 on the year (9-3 CUNYAC), while BMCC sits at 2-15 (2-10 in conference action). Neither game went the full seven innings, as Bronx induced the mercy rule in the opener, and the second game was called due to darkness.

In Bronx's dominant game one victory, the Broncos recorded 15 hits, walked 12 times, and one batter was hit. Marcos Ayala collected two hits, including a homerun and a single. He also scored a pair of runs, walked twice, and drove in four. Justin Nunez reached base five times, as he homered, singled, drew three walks, scored three times, stole a base, and knocked in three runs, and Adrian Urena fell just a homerun short of the cycle, as he singled, doubled, tripled, scored once, and drove in four. Overall, six players in the Broncos' game one lineup recorded at least two hits apiece.

Jason Vasquez pitched a complete game for Bronx, as he earned the victory by allowing just three runs (all earned) on three hits while walking six and striking out seven.

Game two turned out to be a different story for the Broncos, as Bronx was only able to muster two runs (both in the first inning) and three hits overall. All three of Bronx's base hits in the nightcap were singles, two were courtesy of Urena, and another by Quincy Williams. Urena drove in a pair of runs on the day, boosting his season total to a whopping 28.

Starter Matthew Rivera had been cruising along for Broncos, as he had shutout BMCC through five innings, but the Panthers' bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth. BMCC would dent home plate three times in the frame, and following the conclusion of the inning, the game would get called due to darkness, giving the Panthers the victory.

Rivera took the loss, as he hurled 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.

The Broncos will now look to Wednesday evening's CUNYAC title game at MCU Park, as Bronx will take on Kingsborough. Bronx will serve as the home team in the game, and first pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
