Game Recap: Baseball |

Broncos convincingly sweep Kingsborough in doubleheader Thursday, before being overwhelmed in two losses to Suffolk on Saturday

The Broncos' baseball team earned mixed results in doubleheaders against Kingsborough and Suffolk over the past three days, as Bronx swept the Wave in a pair of games by scores of 13-3 and 9-5 this past Thursday in Brooklyn, before getting dominated by scores of 14-0 and 11-0 in two contests today in Manorville, NY. With those aforementioned outputs, the Broncos are now 12-11 on the year (8-2 CUNYAC).

On Thursday, Bronx had its way with Kingsborough. In the 10-run game one victory against the Wave, Esteban De Los Santos pitched a complete game, as he earned the victory by allowing just three runs (two earned) on four hits while not issuing a walk and whiffing five.

Offensively for the Broncos in that victory, Steven Santana finished with three hits, including a double and a pair of singles. He also dented home plate once, drove in three runs, and stole three bases. Michael Mateo tripled, picked up a pair of singles, scored two runs, walked, and drove in three. Darlin Lirano also tripled, singled, scored two runs, drove in one, and walked.

In Bronx's game two victory Juan Vasquez picked up the victory on the mound, hurling 4.1 frames and allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits while walking four and striking out seven. He also hit one batter.

The Broncos pounded out 17 hits in the game two triumph over the Wave, including a homerun and a single by Christian Cedeno. He also scored a pair of runs, drove in two, and drew a walk. Michael Mateo picked up three hits, including two doubles and a single. He also scored a run and drove in a run. Quincy Williams doubled, singled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run, and Adrian Urena added three singles (as well as a run and a RBI).

Bronx is now 8-2 in conference play. If the Broncos split their doubleheader with BMCC this coming Monday, then they will serve as the home school when Bronx and Kingsborough meet for the CUNYAC championship on Wednesday, May 1.

In today's doubleheader against Suffolk, the Bronx were silenced all day. In game one, the Broncos weren't able to register a hit in a five-inning defeat to the Sharks. Jesse Castillo started and took the loss, as he tossed just two innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out a pair.

Game two was much of the same for Bronx, with the Broncos unable to push across a run while only registering two hits. The Broncos were able to muster a pair of singles, one each by Michael Mateo and Wilson Nunez Jr.

Matthew Rivera started and pitched fairly well in his two innings of work, allowing just one run (earned) on one hit while walking two and striking out two. He took the loss in the game. The Broncos' relievers struggled mightily, with Carlos Morel and Alexander Pimentel combining to log 2.1 innings, allowing 10 runs (all earned) on 10 hits while walking one and striking out one.

The Broncos will play one final tune-up doubleheader before the CUNYAC title game, as they'll take on the Borough of Manhattan Community College on Monday afternoon. The games will take place at Padavan Preller Field. Start-times are scheduled for 1:30pm and 4:30pm.
