Game Recap: Baseball |

Seven-run third inning by Senators too much for Broncos to overcome, as Bronx suffers 10-6 loss to SUNY Ulster on Wednesday

The Broncos' baseball tem refused to quit on Wednesday afternoon, but Bronx ultimately fell short, suffering a 10-6 defeat at the hands of the Senators of SUNY Ulster at Ohio Field. With the defeat, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 10-9 on the 2019 campaign, while the Senators leveled their record to 13-13 on the year.

Ulster plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, courtesy of RBI singles by Mariano Poll and Justin Rodriguez. Bronx got one back in the bottom half of the frame, denting home plate once via a sacrifice fly by Marcos Ayala. At the conclusion of one inning of play, the Senators held a 2-1 edge.

The Senators put a considerable gap between themselves and the Broncos in the top of the third inning, as they scored seven times in the frame to jump out to a commanding 9-1 lead. SUNY Ulster used four hits, four walks, a hit batsman, and a Bronx error to plate the seven runs.

Later, SUNY Ulster held a 10-3 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Broncos would start to rally. Ayala's two-RBI double brought home Darlin Liriano and Hector Camacho to pull Bronx to within five runs at 10-5. Urena would later record a RBI single to left field, pulling his team to within four at 10-6. Bronx was unable to push across any more runs for the remainder of the inning, or the game, as the Senators would hold on for a four-run victory.

Max Vanwagenen started the game for SUNY Ulster, and he pitched well, allowing two runs (only one earned) on one hit while issuing four walks, hitting a batter, and striking out four. Reliever Branden Perry got the victory despite a rocky outing, as he tossed three frames, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while walking one, hitting a batter, and whiffing six.

Aneudy Pimentel took the loss for Bronx, as he pitched two innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits while walking four, hitting a batter, and throwing two wild pitches. Jesse Castillo and Victor Pena were brilliant in relief for the Broncos, combining to pitch five innings, allowing just one earned run (Castillo) on three hits while issuing four free passes and striking out six.

Offensively for the Senators, Tyler Guadagno put forth a monster performance, as he homered, doubled, dented home plate three times, drove in three, and stole a base. Mariano Poll was also brilliant at the dish, as he tripled, singled, scored a run, drove in one, and walked.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Adrian Urena collected a pair of hits, doubling, singling, and driving in two runs. Marcos Ayala had a fine all-around game, as he went 2-for-3 with a double, sacrifice fly, a run scored, and three RBI.

The Broncos will return to action tomorrow afternoon, as they'll travel to Brooklyn, NY to face the Wave of Kingsborough in a CUNYAC doubleheader. Start-times are scheduled for 12:00pm and 3:00pm.
