Despite furious rally, Broncos suffer first CUNYAC loss of 2019, dropping 9-8 decision to Kingsborough

The Broncos suffered their first CUNYAC loss on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Wave of Kingsborough in Brooklyn, NY by a score of 9-8. The game was called after eight innings due to darkness to ensure the safety of the student-athletes. With the defeat Bronx, slipped to 10-6 on the 2019 season, and 6-1 in conference play. The Wave improved to 10-12 overall, and 7-2 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for Bronx, the Broncos' magic number to clinch a spot in the 2019 CUNYAC title game on May 1 still decreased to one. If Bronx wins one of its final five conference contests, or the Panthers of BMCC lose one of their final five CUNYAC games, then the Broncos will clinch.

In today's game, Bronx was trailing 3-0 after three and a half frames before denting home plate three times in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. That three-run fourth for the Broncos was capped by Steven Santana's RBI double.

Kingsborough would waste no time recapturing the lead, as the Wave would score five times in the top of the fifth to grab a commanding 8-3 edge. Peter Lombardo's two-RBI double started the scoring for Kingsborough during the big inning. That was followed by a sacrifice fly by Walfi Regalado, and later, a sacrifice fly by Anthony Oliva. The final run of the fifth inning came when James Barasch drew a walk with the bases loaded.

The score remained 8-3 in favor of the Wave until the top of the seventh, when Kingsborough would tack on a run to increase its lead to six runs. Things looked bleak for the Broncos, but just as they have done the entire season, they refused to quit, and battled back.

Bronx scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to consecutive RBI singles by Michael Mateo and Quincy Williams. In the bottom of the eighth, the Broncos were able to push across three runs, but with runners on the corners and two men out, Williams would ground out, ending the Broncos' threat, and essentially, the game (darkness).

Alexander Pimentel took the loss for Bronx, as he hurled four innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits while walking a pair and striking out one. Carlos Morel turned in a very uneven relief effort, tossing four frames and allowing just two runs (one earned) on one hit, but he walked seven batters and struck out just one.

Lombardo picked up the win for the Wave, as he allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits while walking three and striking out five. After Brian McRedmond lasted just 0.2 innings (three earned runs, four hits, one strikeout), Sal Armato came on. He would allow one hit before retiring Quincy Williams to earn the save.

At the dish for the Broncos, Mateo singled four times, scored a run, and drove in three. Santana collected a pair of doubles, and Adrian Urena doubled, singled twice, scored three times, and stole a base.

Lombardo, in addition to picking up the victory on the hill, also had a solid day batting. He doubled, singled, scored a run, and drove in a pair. Abner Victor singled twice, dented home plate three times, and drew a pair of walks, as well.

Bronx will return to action tomorrow, as the Broncos will face Middlesex at Ohio Field. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
