Bronx drops doubleheader to Nassau on Saturday evening by scores of 3-2 and 16-4

The Broncos baseball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday evening, falling to the Lions of Nassau by scores of 3-2 and 16-4 in contests played at Eisenhower Park in Westbury, NY. With the defeats, Bronx slipped to an overall mark of 2-5 on the 2019 campaign. Nassau improved to a record of 4-8 with the victories.

In the opener, the Broncos trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, but refused to go down quietly. Bronx's Michael Mateo, Steven Santana, and Carlos Morel all drew walks to start the frame. A sacrifice fly by Justin Nunez brought home Mateo, slicing the Lions advantage to 3-2. That left runners on first and second with one out, but Hector Camacho and Marcos Ayala would both strike out looking, ending the contest and giving Nassau the one-run victory.

Juan Vasquez pitched well despite taking the loss for Bronx, as he hurled five innings, allowing three runs (only two earned) on three hits while issuing four walks and striking out two. Jerry Jerez hurled a scoreless inning of relief, walking one batter and striking out one. On the flip side, the Lions' Andrew Ammazzaloroso started and pitched four innings, allowing just one run (earned) while scattering three hits, issuing three walks, and striking out one. Brandon Buchan logged the final three innings of the game, allowing one earned run while walking four batters and striking out six.

Bronx only recorded three hits for the game, including two extra-base hits. Michael Mateo homered for the second consecutive game, while also drawing a pair of walks, and Steven Santana doubled and walked. Neudy Salvavor picked up the other Broncos hit, a single.

At the dish for Nassau, it was Thomas Toscano finishing 1-for-4 with a homerun.

In the nightcap, the Lions essentially put the game away in the bottom of third inning with 10 runs in the frame. That catapulted Nassau to a commanding 14-2 edge. The Lions would later win the game 16-4 in just five innings.

Matthew Rivera started and struggled for Bronx in taking the loss, as he logged two innings, allowing nine runs (eight earned) on five hits while walking two, hitting a pair of batters, and striking out one. Aneudy Pimentel did not fare much better in relief, as he recorded just one out, allowing five earned runs on three hits while walking a batter and hitting a batter.

Andrew Williams pitched a five inning complete-game in earning the victory for the Lions, as he allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.

Offensively for Bronx, Ayala singled, drove in a pair of runs, and dented home plate once. Mateo doubled and scored a run, and Adrian Urena singled twice.

Michael Iacobellis put forth a strong nightcap for the Lions, homering and adding a single while recording five RBI and scoring three times. Tucker Hahn finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, a walk, three RBI and a run scored, and Chris Morro added two singles, two RBI, and a run.

Bronx will resume its CUNYAC portion of the 2019 schedule on Tuesday, as the Broncos will travel to Bayside for a game against Queensborough. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.
