The Broncos' baseball team picked up a huge victory on Tuesday afternoon, rallying from a 3-0 deficit to bash the Tigers of Queensborough by a score of 14-5 in a CUNYAC contest played in Bellerose, NY. With the victory, Bronx snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to 3-5 on the season (2-0 in conference play). The Tigers continued to struggle, as Queensborough is now 1-12 on the year, and just 1-4 on the 2019 campaign. The game was called after eight innings of play due to darkness.
What a difference a year has made for Queensborough. The 2018 CUNYAC champs were 8-5 through 13 games a season ago, yet the team has just one victory this year through 13. The Tigers' pitching has struggled, allowing 13.1 runs per contest. On the flip side, Bronx has started slow, but the Broncos' offense has not disappointed. Bronx is averaging 6.9 runs per game across nine games.
In today's contest, Queensborough catapulted to an early 3-0 advantage when Samuel Gutierrez would connect on a three-run homerun. The game would stay 3-0 in favor of the Tigers until the top of the fifth, when the Broncos would dent home plate four times to pull ahead by a score of 4-3. Those four aforementioned runs were accounted for thanks to a two-RBI single by
Adrian Urena, and a two-run homerun by
Michael Mateo.
The Broncos would pad their lead in the top of the sixth inning, plating six more runs. Urena,
Neudy Salvador, and Mateo would each drive in runs during the inning. After five and a half innings of play, Bronx held a commanding 10-3 lead.
After Queensborough got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Broncos would score two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. In the seventh, Bronx's two runs came via RBI doubles by Urena and Mateo. In the eighth,
Marcos Ayala launched a two-run homerun.
Alexander Pimentel started and earned the victory for Bronx despite not having his best stuff. He hurled five frames, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits including a homerun. He also walked two batters and struck out five.
Carlos Morel was excellent in three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and walking one while whiffing one.
Max Zimmer took the loss for Queensborough, surrendering five runs on four hits over four innings, striking out five.
Urena was an on-base machine for Bronx today, as he doubled twice, singled three times, scored three times, and drove in three. Mateo homered twice and doubled, while also denting home plate twice and driving in seven runs, and Ayala hit a homerun, scored three times, walked twice, stole a base, and drove in two.
For the Tigers, Gutierrez hit a homerun, walked, and drove in a pair of runs, and Josue Francisco homered, doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run.
Bronx will look to make it two in a row against Queensborough, as the teams will meet at Padavan-Preller Field on Thursday afternoon. Start-time is scheduled for 2:30pm.
