Westchester offense plates 18 runs in rout of Broncos at Ohio Field on Wednesday afternoon

The Broncos' baseball team fell to 1-2 on the 2019 campaign, dropping a game to the Vikings of Westchester Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Ohio Field by a score of 18-6. With the victory, the Vikings improved to a mark of 9-1 on the season.

Westchester scored 17 of its 18 runs in the third and fifth innings of this contest. After scoring a run in the top of the first, the Vikings used an eight-run top of the third to catapult ahead by a score of 9-0. Later, in the bottom of the fourth, Bronx would dent home plate three times to slice Westchester's lead to six runs at 9-3, but the Vikings would score nine times in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 18-3 advantage. The Broncos would score three times in the bottom of the fifth, but they were unable to draw any closer, as the Vikings enforced the 10-run mercy rule after five innings, winning the game by 12.

Bronx starter Victor Pena suffered the loss in this one, hurling just 1.2 innings and allowing one run (earned) on one hit while striking out a batter. Optaciano Polo picked up the victory for the Vikings, hurling three shutout frames and not allowing a hit. He walked just one batter, while fanning seven.

Westchester compiled 10 hits in five innings, including four doubles. Steve Guzman went 4-for-4 on the afternoon, recording a pair of doubles, and Sean Vanegas and Aaron Roman each recorded a two-bagger. Vanegas went 2-for-4 with four RBI's and two runs scored, and CJ Spence singled three times, scored a pair of runs, and knocked in three. Finally for the Vikings, it was Jhojandy Hernandez going 1-for-2 with a single, two RBI's, and two runs scored.

In a losing effort for Bronx, the Broncos were paced by Marcos Ayala, as he tripled, singled, scored a run, and knocked in three. Also, it was Carlos Morel singling twice and driving in a pair.

Bronx will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as the Broncos will host Nassau at Ohio Field. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
