Newcomers Hector Camacho, Adrian Urena, and Esteban De Los Santos provide spark in Broncos' 13-5 win over BMCC

The Broncos' baseball team evened their 2019 record at 1-1 on Tuesday afternoon, as Bronx won its home opener by defeating CUNYAC foe BMCC by a score of 13-5 in seven innings. The win also marked the sixth consecutive time the Broncos have defeated the Panthers by six or more runs in a game at Ohio Field.

In today's contest, starters Alexander Pimentel (Bronx) and Chris Rodriguez (BMCC) pitched scoreless first frames. In the top of the second, the Panthers broke through for three runs (all earned), thanks to an RBI single by Rodriguez, and a two RBI double by Juan Martinez. The Broncos got one back in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI base hit by Adrian Urena. After two innings of play, Bronx trailed by two.

The Broncos took the lead in the bottom of the third, plating three runs on just one hit. Quincy Williams started the frame by getting hit by the pitch before stealing second base. Camacho stepped up to the dish next. He would lay down a bunt in an attempt to sacrifice Williams over to third, but would reach first and advance to second base when Rodriguez would throw the ball away. Williams would score on that play. Michael Mateo was next up, and he would get hit by the pitch. That was followed by Neudy Salvador recording a single and advancing to second base on an error by the Panthers' shortstop. Mateo advanced to third base on the play, and Camacho scored. The fourth and final run of the inning came via an RBI groundout by Urena.

Later, Bronx added a fifth run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Urena would ground out to first base, unassisted. After five complete, the Broncos led by a score of 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, BMCC's Andys Ventura started the frame with a walk, and that would be the final batter that Bronx starter Alexander Pimentel would face. Esteban De Los Santos would then come on in relief. Inherited runner Ventura would eventually score on an RBI single by Maxwell Jimenez, and the Panthers would tie the game later in the frame when Juan Martinez would trot home on a balk by De Los Santos. After six and a half, the game was knotted at five runs apiece.

From there, it was all Broncos. Camacho would record a clutch two-RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Bronx would plate six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to enforce an eight-run mercy rule (13-5) and win the game.

De Los Santos picked up the victory for the Broncos in relief, hurling two innings and allowing one run (earned) on one hit while walking two, balking once, and striking out one. BMCC's Rodriguez was all over the place in taking the loss, as he tossed six innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six walks and five hits while hitting four batters. On the flip side, he did show shades of potential by recording seven strikeouts.

Offensively for the Broncos, Camacho tripled, scored two runs, walked, was hit by a pitch, and drove in three. Urena singled twice and picked up five RBI, and Neudy Salvdaor added two singles while scoring two runs and walking once. He was also hit by a pitch.

In a losing effort for BMCC, Martinez doubled, scored a run, drove in two, and walked. Ventura recorded two singles and scored a pair of runs, as well.

The Broncos will look to make it two victories in a row, as they'll host the Vikings of Westchester tomorrow afternoon. Start-time at Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:30pm.
