Broncos offense shows great potential, but pitchers struggle in 14-6 loss to Region XV Division I Monroe College

The Broncos' baseball team started its 2019 season on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Mustangs of NJCAA Region XV Division I Monroe College by a score of 14-6 in eight innings. The game was played at Dick Caswell Baseball Field in New Rochelle, NY. While the game served as the season-opener for Bronx, the Mustangs improved to 6-14 with the win. Monroe College has now won four of its previous five games following a 2-13 start to the 2019 campaign.

In what was a very difficult opener for the Broncos hurlers, Aneudy Pimentel got the start and lasted two innings, allowing one run (earned) on three hits while walking a better. Bronx's next three relievers, Jesse Castillo, Victor Pena, and Jerry Jerez, combined to record eight outs, allowing 10 runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking three and striking out a batter. The lone bright spot on the mound for the Broncos on the afternoon was Esteban De Los Santos, as he tossed 1.1 shutout innings, allowing one hit and issuing one free pass while whiffing two batters.

For the Mustangs, their starter, Patrick Morrissey, turned in a dreadful performance, pitching an inning and allowing four earned runs on five walks and two strikeouts. His teammates, though, would pick him up. Ricky Otero would hurl the next two frames, allowing just one unearned run, and he was followed by winning pitcher Andrew Pena, as Pena tossed two innings, allowing just one run (earned) on three hits while striking out three.

Things looked promising early on for Bronx, as the Broncos dented home plate four times in the top of the second inning. Matthew Rivera drove in a run by drawing a bases-loaded walk, and that was following by Justin Nunez getting hit by a pitch to bring home another run. Bronx's third run of the frame came via a wild pitch, and the fourth run came courtesy of a Hector Camacho Sacrifice Fly.

Later in the contest, in the bottom of the third inning with the Broncos holding on to a 5-2 lead, Iasid Bernal would clear the bases with a three-RBI triple to knot the game at five runs apiece.

Bronx would re-take the lead briefly in the top of the fourth inning when Nunez drove home a run with a double to center field. Rivera scored on the play to put the Broncos ahead by a score of 6-5. That would be the final run that Bronx would score, though, as the Mustangs scored nine unanswered runs over their final five turns at-bat to run away from the Broncos.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, veteran Justin Nunez turned in a nice performance, recording a double, drawing a walk, and driving in a pair of runs. Newcomer Neudy Salvador added a two-bagger while scoring a run, drawing a walk, and driving in one, and Matthew Rivera singled, walked, drove in a run, and dented home plate twice.

In the victory for Monroe College, the Mustangs were paced by Iasid Bernal, as turned in a stellar afternoon by recording three hits and falling just a homerun short of the cycle. He also drove in four runs. Daniel Alfonzo doubled, singled three times, recorded a sac fly, scored a run, and drove in four, and Freddy Rojas Jr. tripled, singled, stole a base, scored three times, and drew two walks.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday afternoon, as Bronx will open play its home opener against CUNYAC foe BMCC. Start-time at Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:30pm.
