Broncos fall in penalty kicks to Suffolk as quest for NJCAA Region XV title comes to an end

The Broncos men's soccer team saw its 2019 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as Bronx lost to Suffolk in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 NJCAA Region Championship Tournament. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation and two overtimes, before the Sharks solidified the victory by outscoring the Broncos 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Things looked promising for the Broncos early on, as Bronx played about as crisp a half as possible. Gerson Gonzalez put the Broncos ahead at 15:00, notching a goal off a beautiful lead pass from Amadou Dieng. 24 minutes later, at 39:00, CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Ruddy Segura made it 2-0 Bronx when he scored an unassisted goal. That would be the final goal scored of the opening session.

Suffolk would notch to quick goals in the second half to tie the match at two apiece. Kimani Clarke scored unassisted at 47:30, and six minutes later, Olvin Yanes knotted the match at two apiece with a goal (53:00, from Jevoun McKellar).

Neither team was able to break through for another goal throughout regulation or the overtime periods, as the match would be decided with penalty kicks. Suffolk would then edge Bronx by a count of 4-3 in kicks.

Bronx showed plenty of promise during the 2019 season, and the Broncos will be ready to make another run at CUNYAC and NJCAA Region XV titles when the 2020 season begins in August.
