Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Broncos give unblemished Panthers all they could handle, but Bronx falls to BMCC 90-82 at Alumni Gym

The Broncos' men's basketball team put forth one its strongest efforts of the year, but Bronx ultimately fell short, losing a CUNYAC contest to the Panthers of BMCC by a score of 90-82 Tuesday evening at the Alumni Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Broncos flipped to 3-7 on the 2018-2019 campaign (1-2 CUNYAC action), while BMCC stayed unblemished at 12-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Despite the loss for Bronx, Malik Hamilton played a tremendous game, scoring a team-high 26 points while connecting on three shots from downtown. He also hit five of his six shots from the charity stripe, and added eight rebounds, four steals, and three assists. The versatile Tilquan Rucker posted a double-double with 24 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He also added a game-high five steals, as well. Hector Montano – who only played 29 minutes due to foul trouble, added 12 points, seven caroms, and a pair of steals.

For the Panthers in their triumph, Terrell Fullerton was absolutely masterful, leading all scorers with 33 points. He connected on 15 of his 18 attempts from the free throw line, while also recording a game-high seven assists, pulling down seven rebounds, and adding three steals. Quran Dublin contributed 21 points (hitting five three pointers in the process) and grabbing six boards, and Ashan Adams and Viktor Kovacevic netted 14 and 10 points, respectively.

In what was perhaps the Broncos' most impressive effort of the season, Bronx and BMCC would exchange the lead nine times in the opening 7:23 of action, with the Panthers taking the lead for good, 16-14, thanks to a converted layup by Adams. The biggest advantage taken by BMCC in the opening session was eight points (34-26), and the Panthers took just a 41-36 edge into the locker room at halftime.

During the early stages of the second stanza, it looked as though BMCC might start to run away with the game, as the Panthers scored 13 of the first 17 points of the session to catapult to a lead of 54-40 with 15:26 remaining on the clock. Over the ensuing 4:29, though, the Broncos put together 14-2 run to pull to within 56-54 with 10:55 to go. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Rucker's five points during the spurt. TaVaughn Edwards also hit back-to-back jumpers during the run, and Hamilton drilled a three-point basket, as well.

During the next 4:19 of play, the Broncos continued to keep things close, and never let BMCC take more than a four-point lead during that time.

Later, the Panthers held a 12-point lead (86-74) with 2:13 remaining in the game, but Bronx continued to push, putting together a 6-0 run (capped by a three-point basket by Joshua Rivera) to pull to within six (86-80) with 1:27 left. On the Panthers' next possession, BMCC would ice the game when Amir Davis would convert on a driving layup to put his team back ahead by eight with 1:09 to play. From there, Bronx would not convert on another field goal, as BMCC held on to win the game by eight.

The Panthers connected on 54.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (32-59), compared to 37.2 percent for the Broncos (29-78). Both teams shot extraordinarily well from the line, with BMCC hitting 20 of their 27 attempts from the charity stripe (74.1 percent) and Bronx connecting on 17 of their 23 shots from the line (73.9 percent). Both squads were deadlocked with 42 rebounds apiece, and the Broncos won the turnover battle, committing 13 mistakes while forcing 21 Panther miscues.

Bronx will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Broncos will host the Tigers of Queensborough in another CUNYAC contest at the Alumni Gymnasium. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a Broncos foam finger. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
