Box Score

2/19/14 - Brooklyn, NY

The CUNYAC semifinal nightcap between the number two seeded LaGuardia Community College Redhawks and number three seeded Bronx Community College Broncos marked a historic event. The contest was the first postseason game in both the Lady Broncos and Red Hawk's Histories.

Things looked hopeful for LaGuardia early when they opened up a 20-6 lead to start the game.  Freshman Chyna Lennox scored 14 points out of the teams 33 total points. Emily Arias netted 9 for the Redhawks and Kristen Deer tallied 8 of her own.

BCC found their scoring rhythm but at the half the Redhawks led the Lady Broncos by 8, 33-25.

The Broncos second half opened up with a flurry of scoring as the team went on a 9-0 run to take the lead 34-33.  For much of the second half the teams exchanged buckets and the score remained close with both teams taking turns leading.  With 5:38 left in regulation, Dorae Murray hit a jumper to extend the Bronx lead to 52-47 and the team didn't look back from there.  BCC scored a total of 40 points in the half en route to the upset the higher-seeded Redhawks 65-57.

Freshman Hivelize Escobar scored a total of 19 points in the second half and had  29 points and 16 rebounds on the game. She was awarded Modell's Player of Game for her efforts.

"We wanted to win this," said Escobar. "We really, really wanted to win this."

Although Escobar's double-double and dominance on the court stood-out, head coach Pete Cepeda believed the victory was determined as a team.

"It was a team effort," said Cepeda. "Everyone chipped in."

With the win, the Lady Broncos advance to the CUNYAC Finals on Friday, where they will face the Queensborough Tigers for the Championship.  Tipoff is at 6pm at Kingsborough Community College
