Bronx baseball program salutes nine sophomores prior to regular season home finale against Suffolk

The Broncos' baseball team dropped its regular season home finale on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Sharks of Suffolk by a score of 8-3. The game was played at Ohio Field in the Bronx. With the loss, the Broncos dipped to a mark of 9-12 on the 2026 campaign, while Suffolk improved to 19-17.

Prior to the start of the game, the BCC Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor and salute nine sophomore players who have meant so much to the program over the past two seasons. All of the celebrated student-athletes, including Abel Acosta Vasquez, Adrian Pena, Anderson Puello, Anshel Novelo, Jason Espinoza, Luis Torres, Justin Perez Salcedo, and Luis Villaman, received commemorative action shot picture frames in a show of appreciation for their tenures on the squad. Head Coach Adolfo DeJesus was also presented a plaque celebrating his 40 years of service to the baseball program.

The ceremony, and the game, were attended by Bronx Community College President Dr. Larry Johnson Jr., as he also threw out the first pitch of the game.

After two scoreless innings to start the game, Suffolk finally got on the board in the top of the third against Novelo, as Joe Leo registered a two-RBI single to put the Sharks ahead 2-0. The visitors added a run in the third on an inside-the-park homerun Michael DiGiuseppe, as Suffolk boosted its advantage to three (3-0).

The Sharks continued to add to their lead in the top of the fifth, courtesy of an inside-the-park homerun by Niko Moraitis, an infield RBI single by Mark Brewer, and an RBI base hit to right field by Michael Iovino. At that juncture of the contest, Suffolk held a commanding 6-0 edge.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Broncos scored two runs on a two-out, two-RBI single to right by Torres. Lenox Rondon and Braily Severino scored, as Bronx pulled to within four (6-2). Juan Santos then struck out swinging to end the home school's threat.

Later, in the top of the eighth, a two-RBI single by Leo put Suffolk ahead 8-2. That would be more than enough for the Sharks to earn the victory, as the Broncos were only able to plate one more run (an RBI single by Villaman in the ninth) for the remainder of the game.

For the Broncos, Novelo (2-4) took the loss, as he twirled 7.1 innings, allowing eight runs (all earned) on 11 hits while hitting six batters, walking two, and striking out three. Sophomores Puello and Acosta Vasquez combined to record five outs for the Broncos, as neither reliever would allow a run.

Offensively for Bronx, Torres recorded a pair of singles, while driving in two runs and stealing a base, and Villaman singled twice and picked up an RBI. Rondon continued his stellar season at the plate, registering a double and a single while scoring a run, and Juan Santos and Severino each singled and dented home plate once.

Suffolk starter Eric Mohr picked up the victory for his squad, hurling 7.2 frames and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while walking one, hitting a batter, and striking out eight. He faced just seven batters passed the minimum in earning the triumph.

At the dish for the Sharks, Leo doubled, singled three times and drove in four runs, while Moraitis homered, got hit by a pitch twice, and scored three runs. DiGiuseppe hit a homerun and a triple, while also scoring a run and picking up an RBI, and Brewer registered an RBI single, walked, got hit by a pitch, stole a base, and scored a run. Finally, it was Brendan Murphy picking up two singles on the day.

Bronx will cap the regular season portion of its 2026 campaign on Saturday, as the Broncos will head to Selden, NY for a doubleheader with the Sharks. Start-times for the games are set for 12:00pm and 3:00pm.
