Broncos put forth valiant effort, but ultimately lose to Kingsborough in CUNYAC title game 8-4

The Broncos' baseball team finalized its 2024 season on Monday afternoon, putting forth a valiant effort but ultimately falling to the Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 8-4 in the CUNYAC championship game. The contest took place on the campus on Kingsborough Community College. With the victory, the Wave (17-19), won their third consecutive conference title, while the Broncos, appearing in their fifth consecutive championship game, wrapped up their campaign at 8-24.

Bronx opened up the scoring immediately in the top of the first inning when Steven Santos singled up the middle to plate Frailin Jimenez. Kingsborough answered back in the bottom of the frame when Thomas Laino slugged a three-run homerun to right center to put the Wave up 3-1.

In the top of the second, with one batter retired, Juan Rodriguez and Moises Ortega earned consecutive free passes, giving the visitors runners on first and second. Jimenez then lined out to left field for the second out, before Euniel De La Rosa registered a clutch, two-out, two-RBI double down the left field line to tie the game. He was tagged out trying to extend the hit into a triple. After an inning and a half, the game was tied, 3-3.

The complexion of the conference championship clash changed in the top of the fifth via a controversial strike call. With the bases loaded, one out, and Cristhian Gonzalez working himself into a favorable 3-1 count, Kingsborough reliever Giovanni Loiacono's next offering appeared to be high, which would have forced in the go-ahead run for Bronx. The pitch was called a strike, however, and Gonzales would eventually strike out. Justin Martinez followed by popping out to first base, essentially ending the threat.

In the bottom of the fifth, Kingsborough took a 4-3 advantage when Filippo Venditti hit a homerun to left field. That aforementioned score held true until the top of the seventh, when Raul Chevalier picked up a two-out RBI single, scoring De La Rosa, and tying the game at four apiece.

Kingsborough took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh, plating three runs. Nasir Useuni recorded a pinch-hit single to right field to score two runs followed by a sacrifice fly from Victor Perez. The Wave added insurance in the eighth inning via a bunt single from Yoskar Guzman to score Christopher Jace.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Chevalier was hit by a pitch to give Bronx a baserunner and keep the game alive. Gonzales then popped out to third base to end the contest.

Bronx ace Wilber Batista gave everything he had on the mound, but ultimately took the loss (2-4), hurling six frames and allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking five, hitting a batter, and striking out three.

Offensively for the Broncos, De La Rosa was the team's primary contributor, registering a double and a single while scoring a run and driving in a pair. Steven Santos singled twice and drove in a run, and Chevalier reached base four times, singling, walking twice, and getting hit by a pitch. He also picked up an RBI.

Thomas Laino was named the championship's Most Valuable Player. The left-handed batter went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored. The Wave finished the game with nine hits, including a pair each of Venditti and Jace.

Kingsborough utilized five pitchers in getting the victory, but it was reliever Jayden Caro (1-0) getting credited with the win on the mound. In his one inning of work, he held Bronx to one run on two hits.
