Broncos' pitching struggles in 14-4 loss to Kingsborough in 2023 CUNYAC title game

The Broncos' baseball team's push for a CUNYAC baseball title ended Monday, as Bronx was defeated by the Wave of Kingsborough by a score of 14-4 in a seven inning, mercy-rule enforced contest played at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn, NY. With the loss, Bronx slipped to 8-22 on the 2023 campaign, while the Wave won its second consecutive CUNYAC title, improving to 25-12 in the process.

Bronx totaled eight hits on the day, including two apiece for Wilkin Ruan and Yoskar Almonte. Wilkin Ruan doubled, singled, score twice, stole a base, and walked, while Almonte singled twice and drove in a run. Samuel De La Rosa and Leonardo Francisco each registered an RBI single, with Francisco also drawing a walk.

Offensively for Kingsborough, the Wave was paced by Thomas Laino's stellar day at the dish, as he notched three hits, including a triple and a pair of singles. He also scored four runs, drove in a pair, and walked. Jonathan Fonseca picked up a huge bases-clearing double in the gap. He also walked, as well, and Nicholas Piazza reached base three times, recording a single, walking twice, scoring two runs, driving in two, and stealing a base.

Jordy Garcia, Bronx's ace pitcher, did not have it on this day, as he was only able to record four outs, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while walking a batter and hitting another. Three of the Broncos' four relievers also struggled, as Christopher Messon, Jefferson Santiago, and Alex Messon combined to toss three innings, allowing nine runs on three hits while issuing eight walks. Luis Roman Sanchez was a bright spot, as he allowed just one unearned runs over two innings while not allowing a hit or walking a batter.

Wave starter Jonathan Fonseca twisted 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while walking a pair, hitting a batter, and striking out four. Justin Rosado hurled 2.1 frames, allowing one earned run and one hit while walking a batter and striking out one. He earned the victory for the champions.

Piazza's RBI single put the Wave on the board in the bottom of the first inning, but Garcia escaped further trouble, getting Fonseca to ground out with the bases loaded and two men away. After one complete inning, Kingsborough led 1-0.

Bronx tied the game in the top of the second when Alex Messon reached on a fielder's choice. Fonseca fielded Messon's grounder and proceeded to throw the ball home, trying to nail Francisco at the dish, but the ball was dropped by Kingsborough catcher Justin Ramsey, allowing Bronx to tie the game, 1-1. Sanchez grounded into a double play on the next pitch, as Kingsborough avoided further damage.

After Kingsborough took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, Laino registered a two-RBI triple to increase the Wave's edge to 4-1. That score would remain steady until the bottom of the fourth, when the Wave broke the game open with five runs to grab a commanding 9-1 advantage. Those five runs came via RBI walks by Piazza and Bryan Lopez Duran, and a three-RBI double by Fonseca.

The Broncos refused to go down quietly, scratching out two runs in the top of the fifth, thanks to an RBI infield single by Angel Calderon, and an RBI fielder's choice by Almonte. That made is 9-3 in favor of Kingsborough. Unfortunately for Bronx, the Wave would answer again.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Kingsborough scored four runs on just two hits, denting home plate twice on wild pitchers, another time on a walk, and one more time on a fielder's choice. After five innings of play, Kingsborough led 13-3.

As the game later moved to the top of the seventh, the Wave needed to register just three more outs to enforce the 10-run mercy rule after seven innings, but the Broncos kept the game alive, as Samuel De La Rosa picked up an RBI single, scoring Wilkin Ruan, to make it 13-4.

In the bottom of the seventh, with a runner on third base and one out, Piazza laid down a squeeze bunt, as Laino motored home, giving Kingsborough the victory, and essentially, its second consecutive conference title game.
