Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball suffers pair of defeats to ASA College (Brooklyn) Sunday, falling to Avengers 3-2 and 12-2 (five innings)

The Broncos baseball team began its 2020 campaign on Sunday afternoon, dropping a pair of games to the Avengers of ASA College (Brooklyn) by scores of 3-2 and 12-2 (five innings). The contests took place at Ohio Field in the Bronx.

Bronx stuck early in game one of the doubleheader, plating two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of RBI doubles by veteran Hector Camacho and newcomer Yefraini Tejada.

The Avengers answered Bronx's impressive first frame by registering a run apiece in the second and third innings off of Bronx starter Rodrigo Garcia. ASA College (Brooklyn) cut the Broncos' lead in half in the top of the second thanks to Jose Lojo's RBI walk. Angel Estevez's RBI groundout in the top of the third knotted the game at two apiece.

ASA College (Brooklyn) would take the lead for good in the top of the fourth. In what was perhaps the turning point of the game, Kevin Javier of the Avengers lifted a fly ball into right field that seemed to be of a routine nature, but Broncos right fielder Elieser Munoz would drop the ball, allowing Javier to motor to third base. The next batter in the inning, Henry Bernard, would drive home Javier on an infield single to shortstop. That would turn out to be the final run scored of the game.

Avengers starting pitcher Mauricio Mendez settled down nicely after a rocky first inning. He earned the victory in game one, tossing five frames and allowing two earned runs on four hits while issuing three free passes and striking out seven. He also retired 13 of the final 14 batters that he faced.

Anshel Genao picked up the save for ASA College (Brooklyn) in game one, hurling two scoreless frames and allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out four. The Broncos did have an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, as Bronx had runners on first and third with two out, but Fraini Tejada struck out looking to end the game.

Garcia took the loss for the Broncos in game one, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out seven. Bronx relievers Matthew Rivera and Fraini Tejada shined in three innings of relief work. Rivera tossed two scoreless frames, allowing no hits and walking one while whiffing two, and Tejada worked one inning, allowing no baserunners and striking out two.

Camacho, Yefraini Tejada, and Neudy Salvador each recorded in a double in the opener for the Broncos. Bronx registered five hits in game one overall, with the aforementioned Tejada being the only Bronco to record two hits in game one (he also singled).

Game two was all Avengers. ASA College (Brooklyn) led the game 2-0, but really broke things open in the third, plating eight more runs to take a commanding 10-0 advantage after two and a half frames. 13 batters came to the plate for the Avengers in that third inning, with the frame featuring an RBI triple by Darrell Soto.

After the Avengers tacked on an 11th run thanks to an RBI fielder's choice hit into by Marlos Pertuz, the Broncos added two runs in the bottom of the fourth when Domiel Castillo registered a two-RBI single to break up the shutout.

ASA College (Brooklyn) added one more run in the top of the fifth, and the Broncos were unable to push across any runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Avengers recorded the five inning victory via the mercy rule.

In the game two triumph for the Avengers, hurler Willis Roberts (starter) and hurlers Jesus Baez and Angel Ortiz-Reyes (relievers) combined to allow just two runs and two hits while striking out seven. Offensively for ASA College (Brooklyn), Kevin Javier recorded three hits, including a leadoff inside-the-park homerun. He also drove in two runs, scored a pair, and walked once. In addition, Darrell Soto tripled, singles, scored twice, and drove in a run.

Jerry Jerez started and took the loss for the Broncos, as he lasted two innings, allowing two earned runs and three hits while walking two.

Offensively for Bronx in game two, Domiel Castillo's two-RBI single turned out to be the highlight, as the Broncos were only able to register one more hit for the contest – a double by Fraini Tejada.

The Broncos are 0-2 for the first time since 2017, and will look to get in the win column on Wednesday afternoon, as Bronx will host Union County College. Start-time for that game at Ohio Field is scheduled for 3:30pm.
