Broncos finalize season with 14-6 defeat to Nassau in NJCAA Division III Region XV Tournament contest

The Broncos wrapped-up their 2019 campaign on Saturday, falling to the Lions of Nassau Community College by a score of 14-6 (seven innings) in an NJCAA Division III Region XV Tournament game. The contest took place at the Eastport South Manor Athletic Complex in Manorville, NY. With the defeat, the Broncos finalized their season at 16-17, while the Lions would eventually cap their year at 19-14.

Joseph Wolf pitched a complete game in earning the victory for Nassau, as he tossed seven frames, allowing six runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking six batters and striking out right.

Jesse Castillo took the loss in relief for the Broncos, as he came on for Matthew Rivera, who had previously started and allowed six earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. Castillo was only able to record one out on the day, walking two batters (both runners scored) and whiffing one.

The turning point of this game came in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Broncos had owned a 6-4 lead, but the Lions would plate six runs in that frame, and refused to look back from there. Thomas Toscano's two-run homer off Rivera tied the game at six apiece. Castillo would then come on, and issue walks to Nick Cavallo and Anthony Citarelli during the frame. Cavalo would score on a RBI single by Jordan Miller to give the Lions the edge for good, and Nassau would dent home plate three more times to take a commanding 10-6 lead after five.

Bronx was unable to score another run for the remainder of the contest, and Nassau would score three times in the sixth and once in the seventh to enforce the eight-run mercy rule after seven innings of play.

Despite the loss for the Broncos, Justin Nunez finished his day 2-for-3 with a double, single, walk, run scored, and two runs driven in. Adrian Urena doubled, singled, and picked up a RBI. Christian Cedeno turned in a stellar effort as well, hitting a homerun, recording a single, denting home plate twice, driving in two runs, and stealing a base.

In all, it was a successful season for the Broncos. The team won its first CUNYAC championship since 2015 with a thrilling 9-7 victory over the Wave of Kingsborough back on May 1. Bronx qualified for the NJCAA Division III Region XV Tournament yet again, and the team averaged a whopping seven runs per contest throughout the season. They'll look to make it two straight CUNY crowns and another trip to the Region XV Tournament when the 2020 season gets underway next March!
