Game Recap: Baseball |

Bronx's magic number for clinching spot in CUNYAC Championship Game at three, as Broncos silence Tigers, 8-4 and 7-1

The Broncos' baseball team continued to stay hot on Saturday, putting the finishing touches on an impressive four-game sweep of CUNYAC-rival Queensborough, defeating the Tigers by scores of 8-4 and 7-1. With the victories, Bronx is now 6-5 on the 2019 campaign (5-0 CUNYAC). Queensborough continued to search for answers, falling to 1-15 on the year, and 1-7 in conference competition.

By downing the Tigers four times this week, the Broncos' magic number to clinch a spot in the 2019 CUNYAC title game is down to three. Any combination of three conference wins by Bronx, or three defeats suffered by BMCC, and the Broncos will find themselves playing for the CUNYAC championship on May 1.

In the Broncos' game one victory, Bronx was paced by newcomer Hector Camacho, as he recorded three singles while scoring a run and driving in two. Additionally, Marcos Ayala doubled, singled, scored twice, and drove in a run. Also, it was veteran Justin Nunez scored a pair of runs and collected two hits including a double, and finally, Neudy Salvador singled twice, was hit by a pitch, and recorded one RBI.

Despite the loss for the Tigers, Queensborough was led offensively by Nicholas DiLorenzo, as he reached base three times, tripling, recording a single, and drawing a walk. Christian Caraballo also had a quality day at the dish, picking up two singles and denting home plate once.

Esteban De Los Santos started and picked up the victory for the Broncos. Despite laboring at times, De Los Santos did a quality job, tossing four innings and allowing just two runs (earned) while scattering six hits, issuing two walks, and striking out five batters. Darlin Liriano hurled 1.1 innings for Bronx, not allowing a hit and walking one while striking out two. Carlos Morel dazzled in finishing the game, recording five outs and not allowing a baserunner while whiffing two batters.

Tom Gorman started and pitched a complete game for the Tigers, taking the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while walking two and striking out three.

In game two, neither team was able to push across a run until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Broncos would score six times to essentially put the game away.

Leading the way offensively from Bronx in game two was Darlin Liriano, as he recorded a pair of singles while scoring a run and driving in three. Adrian Urena contributed with three singles, two runs scored, and a RBI. Camacho and Quincy Williams recorded a pair of singles apiece, with Camacho denting home plate once.

Matthew Rivera dazzled in recording the victory for the Broncos, as he pitched 5.1 innings, allowing just one run (earned) on one hit while walking one, hitting a batter, and striking out one. Alexander Pimentel tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while whiffing a batter.

Queensborough's pitching woes continued, with Angel Bayron taking the loss. He allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits while issuing five free passes, hitting a batter, and striking out four.

The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday, as they'll take to the road to battle the Express of Monroe College-Bronx. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
